57,000 rental flats plan to build by 2015

Singapore: 57,000 rental flats are planning to deliver by the government in 2015. The HDB spokesperson said the government is “on track” to meet its target of 50,000 rental flats this year, but for now the government will build 2,000 rental flats next year for families with lower income and will be located in Punggol, Yishun, Sembawang, Sengkang and Bukit Batok expected to be occupied by 2014.

“Many families cannot afford to buy their own flat that’s why rental units are a necessity.” said the Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his National Day Rally. One or two bedroom units, rented at around S$26 to S$275 per month, depend on the tenant’s income.

“Requests for rental flats usually come from the elderly with domestic issues and younger couples or families facing financial problems.” stated Teo Ser Luck, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.
